“On fundamental issues the mass media in the United States—what we will refer to as the “Free Press”—function very much in the manner of a system of state-controlled propaganda…”
Dear Readers,
The lines above are from the first book I published with South End Press, whose editors stepped up when the original version of The Washington Connection and Third World Fascism was suppressed by Warner. Over the years—they are about to celebrate their 30th anniversary—the South End Press collective has demonstrated again and again that this Press is not a voice for state propaganda.
Look over the titles in the Classics series: bell hooks’ Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center and Sisters of the Yam; Manning Marable’s How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America; Jeremy Brecher’s Strike; Ward Churchill’s Agents of Repression; and Cherrie Moraga’s Loving in the War Years, to name just a few. In more recent years they’ve published important books by Arundhati Roy, Vandana Shiva, Edward Said, Andrea Smith, INCITE!, and Winona LaDuke, along with other writers and activists focusing on issues such as the rising resistance in Latin America, popular worker movements, and redefinitions of reproductive justice and sexual violence.
Few who witnessed its launching or were around when South End rescued my book would have predicted that South End would survive, much less play such an important role in pushing for radical social change. And now, as South End Press is turning 30, I am asking you to help ensure they continue playing this role.
South End Press is collectively run, majority people of color, majority women—how they publish is as political as what they publish. They don’t rely on grants or foundations to do the work they do, and with books costing tens of thousands of dollars to produce and distribute, they exist on the financial edge. To keep the presses going they need your support now.
Can you give $50, $100, $250 toward the printing of a vital new book? Or $500 toward reprinting a book that has already changed your world? Will you consider subscribing to their Community Supported Publishing (CSP) program? Or simply buy a South End Press book for a friend? Any size donation helps to move the struggle forward.
In solidarity,
Noam Chomsky
