8 Essential Items to Bring With You on a Rafting Adventure

Preparing for a river rafting trip involves packing the right essentials. Even though a sense of adventure should be at the top of your packing list, a swimsuit and sunscreen should follow shortly after.

1. Swimsuit

Obviously enough, you’ll end up getting wet on this trip, which involves the need of a swimsuit. However, you need to choose something realistic for the rafting trip. For example, you should leave your bikini at home and baggy swimming trunks since the strong currents can rip them off your body. Instead, you should be wearing durable and comfortable swimsuits that will suit the rafting trip.

2. Warm Hat

I’m sure you know the health fact that nearly half of your body heat releases through your head. This is why it’s so important to wear or pack a warm, wool or fleece hat. However, since you’ll be needing to wear a helmet, make sure it isn’t too bulky.

3. Gloves

We advise you to pack a pair of fleece or neoprene gloves for paddling since your hands are going to get both worn out and cold. However, you should also make sure your gloves have decent grip since you’ll be paddling a lot during the trip.

4. Footwear

We’ll tell you this once, do not wear flip flops during your rafting trip. They are not only guaranteed to be lost in the river, but you can seriously hurt your feet if you don’t wear closed toe shoes. Instead, you should be wearing water shoes, water sandals, or old sneakers that can get ruined. 5. Sunscreen

Since you will be out in the sun all day, it’s important that you pack sunscreen, as well as wear it, during your rafting trip. Not to mention, the water will reflect sunlight to your skin and turn yourself into a human-lobster. Don’t even kid yourself on a cloudy day, UV rays can still burn you through the clouds. You should also consider bringing along lip balm in case your lips get fried from the sun as well.

6. Snack

If you are rafting with a program, they may offer some sort of food. However, you may need an energy boost while out on the river. If so, you will be thanking yourself for packing a snack. Bring an energy bar or other energy boosting snack with you. Stow it away in your pocket for easy access while rafting.

7. Water

Though this may seem obvious, you will want to ensure you bring a large enough water bottle to suit your needs. You will be doing a lot of work during your adventure and you do not want to become dehydrated. Bring a full 32 oz. water bottle with you at the very least. And be sure that you are actually drinking your water!

8. Ziploc Bags

Anything that you want to pack in your backpack for your rafting trip should first be placed in a waterproof Ziploc bag. These bags come in a variety of sizes and will protect your personal items from getting damaged by water. Plus, they do not take up much extra room in your pack, nor do they add a lot of extra weight. This may also make it easier to organize your backpack and find what you are looking quickly.

The last thing you want is to be ill prepared for your rafting trip. This could leave you wet, cold, and possibly in critical danger. It is in your best interest to prepare and pack the necessary items for your trip. Dress for the occasion, drink lots of water, and be sure to pack all your extras in plastic bags.
