How to Choose a Landscaper for Your Home

Landscaping can have a powerful impact on the beauty and aesthetics of a home. While many landscapers can help your home have a decent appearance, it takes a special type of landscaper to help you realize your personal vision for your property. The following guide provides simple tips and tricks on how to choose a landscaper for your home.

There are many good places to search for a landscaper. Google can be a good start for many searches. When looking for a landscaper through Google, it’s important to pay attention to all review sites available for that landscaper. Many different review sites, such as Yelp and Google Local, may contain reviews for a landscaper you’re assessing. A bad review (or a very positive one) may be hidden on any one of several different sites. If you don’t review all the sites that are out there, it may not be possible to get the best landscaper available.

Angie’s List is also a good resource when choosing a landscaper for your home. Angie’s List is usually a step above other review sites. While sites like Yelp and Google Local allow anyone to post reviews, Angie’s List verifies all reviews that are submitted prior to posting. If a review is fraudulent, it won’t be posted to this service. However, there is a downside. While Angie’s List is a cut above the rest, they do charge a monthly fee for their service. If you’re only looking for a single service like landscaping, signing up for a month then canceling your service may be a good idea.

When choosing a landscaper, it’s important to ask for a portfolio of the work they have completed. If they don’t have a portfolio available, that can be a warning sign. If they are just starting out, a lack of a portfolio may not be a big deal. However, an established landscaper that doesn’t have a portfolio may not have completed work that looks great.

After you have reviewed a portfolio, ask a landscaper for references. If a landscaper has an established business with many reviews online, it may not be necessary to ask for a review. However, if a landscaper’s operation is relatively small, he or she may not have a lot of reviews online. If this is the case, ask the landscaper if they have any clients who would be willing to share their experience with you.

If you’re dealing with a larger landscaping company, it’s also a good idea to ask if the company will send the same landscapers to your property each time. Some large landscapers may rotate through many employees each year. If this happens, you may be in a situation where you have people working at your house that you don’t know. This can make many people uncomfortable. At a bare minimum, a landscaping company should send the same foreman for work each time. Many landscaping companies operate with large teams of five to 10 people. That way, a large property can be completed in only an hour or two, and the team has the ability to cover many properties in the same day. As long as the same foreman oversees the team each week, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Finally, it’s a good idea to operate a trial basis with a landscaper. Do not agree to any multiyear contracts when first getting started. Lots of landscapers prefer to sign a weekly, biweekly, or monthly landscaping contract with a client. However, this can leave you in a situation where you’re receiving work that you’re unhappy with for a very long time. To avoid this happening, ask the landscaper if they can work on a monthly basis at the beginning.

After you have found a new landscaper for your home, it’s always good to help other potential homeowners out. Make sure to leave an honest review of your landscaper so that others can know if they’ll be a good fit for their homes too.
