In this digital age, it can seem that anything is possible. Virtual reality exists, people can message friends across oceans and the English language has a new word – ‘Googleable’. But in another sense, nothing seems to be possible these days. Politics is more polarized than ever before and everyone has an opinion on everything. Even something as simple as whether or not England is its own country appears to have caused quite a stir online recently. So let’s take a look at what the arguments are and whether or not there is any truth behind them. Is England a country? Let’s find out…
Is England A Country?
England is a country. It is a country in the sense that it has been set up by its people and they have every right to do what they want with it. This means that they are free to change their government, their laws and their constitution as they see fit. The people of England have made the decision to become an independent state and this is something that other countries around the world should be proud of. However, there are still some issues that need to be resolved by the people of England before they can call themselves an independent nation.
Why Is England Not Its Own Country?
- England is made up of several countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Most English people live in England but many of them don’t have English citizenship. Only 3 million of the population have English citizenship and there are over 50 million people who do not have UK passports (8%)
- The Queen doesn’t rule England but she does rule the UK which is a country within the UK.
- England has its own flag but it is not recognised by any other country in the world. There are many flags that are much better than our flag and some countries even use it as their own flag! We would be so much better off if we had a proper flag like Sweden, Denmark or Spain have!
- The Queen’s head appears on all British coins, stamps and banknotes but none of these items is actually part of the UK because they are made by companies that do not belong to Britain! In fact, only 5% of the UK economy belongs to Britain and the rest belongs to other countries including France, Ireland, Germany and the USA.
- The UK has its own laws but it is not actually a country because many of them are made by European countries! This means that they are not actually part of the UK and they do not apply in England. For example, our laws on smoking in public places are made by France, on animal rights are made by Germany and on alcohol, laws are made by Ireland!
- The Queen does not rule England but she does rule the UK which is a country within the UK. The Queen is head of state for only one country called Great Britain (which is also called England) so she can only be head of state for one country! If she ruled over all of Great Britain then she would be head of state for two countries which would be impossible because it wouldn’t make any sense! So if we want someone to lead us we should have a proper government that is made up of people from all the countries of Great Britain.

Why Is England A Country?
- England has a history of over 1,000 years and has been home to some of Britain’s greatest kings, queens and leaders. Some of these include William the Conqueror, Alfred the Great, Henry I, Edward III and Elizabeth I who was also named ‘The Virgin Queen’ for her military success against Spain and Scotland during World War II. The English people have also contributed to many great scientific discoveries including Isaac Newton who discovered gravity, Robert Boyle who discovered oxygen and Joseph Priestly who discovered chlorine gas (which was used during WWI). One of my favourites of all time is Charles Darwin who wrote On The Origin Of Species which explains how species evolve over time. He also worked on developing a theory of evolution which explains how species develop from one another by natural selection and he published it in 1859.
- Its capital city is London, which is the oldest city in the world with a history of more than 1000 years! It was founded by Romans in 43 AD and until recently it had been the capital of England for 350 years as well as the seat of the English government for many centuries after that! Today it is a global financial centre and a major world city.
- The queen of England has ruled for more than three centuries now! She was crowned in 1953, after her father George VI died unexpectedly on 6th February 1952 in his sleep! She remains the Head of State until today! The current queen is Elizabeth II who took over from her father’s sister – Queen Elizabeth I back in 1952 when she was only 25 years old!
- England has a total area of nearly 52,000 square miles (134,000 square kilometres) with a population of over 55 million people. And the capital city of London is approximately 5,500 square miles (13,000 square kilometres)!
- England is the most populous country in the European Union and its second-largest country by land area and third-largest by total area. It is also one of the most densely populated countries in Europe and its population density is higher than many Western European countries. The highest point in England is Scafell Pike on Cumbria’s Lake District, at 978 metres (3,212 ft). The lowest point in England is at sea level on Wash near Morecambe Bay, at minus 7 feet (22 m).
- According to the 2011 census, there are 606 different languages spoken in England. Most of them are Indo-European languages such as English and Welsh whilst others are in the Celtic, Germanic and Slavic families.
- During the Roman occupation of Britain, the Romans built many roads and settlements to keep track of their empire across Europe and beyond. The most famous road in England is Watling Street which still exists today as a modern-day road. It runs from London to Dover.
- The oldest place in England is Glastonbury – a town known for its ancient Christian sanctuaries and pilgrimage sites dating back to the 6th century! The original abbey was founded by St Joseph of Arimathea in 657 AD! And if you visit Glastonbury you will find that it is not just a town but also a county with its own administrative council, county council, police force and fire service!
Conclusion
In this article, we have explored the question of whether or not England is a country. We have seen that England is a country in its own right with its own culture and traditions, its own government and laws, its own currency, and its own borders. This, along with the fact that England has a first minister like Scotland and Wales, is one of the main reasons why England is a country and not part of another country like Scotland is part of the UK.
